Find a Notary
Use the Find a Notary search tool to check the status and history of a Minnesota notary. Search results provide Current Notary Status and Authorities, Commission Expiration Date, County of Registration, Business Name (if applicable), Commission History and Former Name(s). Find A Notary is designed for individuals who have already identified a notary and wish to verify their status. The search tool does not assist with locating or hiring a notary.
Looking to Hire a Notary Public or Locate a Notary in Your Area?
To locate a notary public, a general online search can be done by typing “notary public near me” into a search engine like Google, Safari, or Edge. Service provider directories or websites may also offer lists of notaries. Friends, co-workers, and family may be able to provide you with references to a notary in your area. And many local establishments and public offices employ notaries.
Places where you might find a notary for hire include:
- Post offices
- Libraries
- Shipping companies
- Print and copy stores
- Lawyers’ offices
- Real estate firms
- Banks and financial institutions
- Accountants’ offices
- Hotel business service centers
Before visiting any of these places, we recommend calling to confirm that notary services are offered and to inquire about their available hours. Some establishments may only notarize documents for existing clients.
How to Use the Find A Notary Search Tool
No account or registration is required to use the Find A Notary search tool.
On the Find a Notary page, enter the notary’s First and/or Last Name, Commission Number, or Business Name in the corresponding search field. Refine your search as needed and click “GO”.
Refining Your Search:
- Limit results by selecting a specific county of registration from the drop-down list. This may not be the county where the notary works.
- Limit a search to only include E-Notaries.
- Limit a search to only include Remote Notaries.
- Expand a search to Include Inactive notaries by checking the box ‘Include Inactive’. This includes notaries not currently commissioned.
Search Results
A list of notary records matching your search will display below the search fields. Data included in the list are Notary Names, Last, First, & Middle; Commission Number; Business Name; County of Registration; and Status. An * by a name indicates it is a notary’s former name. Search results are limited to 500 records found.
To see Notary Details, click the Last Name of the Notary. The Notary Details Page includes the data listed on the results page plus: current E & RON Authority, Commission Expiration Date, Commission History, and Former Names.
Find A Notary Search Logic
The search logic used is a full-text search. A full-text search that finds matches on a complete word or phrase entered. This is not a ‘contains’ type search. Example: Steph will not return results for Stephanie.
The 'By Name or Commission Number' field allows you to search for:
- First and/or Last Name of Notary
- Business Name
- Commission Number
Check ‘Include Inactive’ to expand the search and include notaries that are not currently commissioned.
The search makes no distinction on which fields are searched, and the order of words does not impact results. For example, the input of ‘Bill Johnson’ does not assume that Bill or Johnson is either a first name, last name, or business name. The search will match on the first name field that equals ‘Bill’ or ‘Johnson’, or the last name field that equals ‘Bill’ or ‘Johnson’, or the business name field that equals ‘Bill’ or ‘Johnson’.
Plural forms of words are ignored in the input and in the output. The ‘s’, for example, is dropped when searching for ‘Meyers’ and will match on ‘Meyer’ and ‘Meyers’. These same results are also returned when searching for ‘Meyer’.
