Secretary Simon Encourages Eligible Minnesotans to Register to Vote on National Voter Registration Day

September 26, 2017

In 2016, more Minnesotans than ever before registered to vote before Election Day

SAINT PAUL — Today, on National Voter Registration Day, Secretary of State Steve Simon is encouraging all eligible Minnesotans who are not yet registered to vote to visit mnvotes.org and register. Minnesotans who are already registered to vote should confirm that their voter registration information is up to date, and encourage their friends, family and co-workers to do the same.

In 2016, more Minnesotans than ever before registered to vote before Election Day—3,270,734.

“The voter registration process in Minnesota is easier and more convenient than ever before and I encourage all eligible Minnesotans to visit mnvotes.org and make sure you’re registered to vote, and encourage your friends and family to do the same,” said Secretary Simon. “While Minnesota has more than 3.2 million registered voters, there are an additional 700,000 citizens who are eligible but have not yet registered to vote. We must continue to work to make sure every eligible citizen is registered to vote and makes their voice heard at the ballot box.”

National Voter Registration Day (NVRD) is a national non-partisan voter registration awareness campaign to encourage voter participation and increase awareness about how to register to vote. Secretary Simon, along with Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill, serves on the NVRD Steering Committee.

Minnesotans can register to vote from the comfort of their own home by going online to mnvotes.org. They can register at the polls on Election Day or when applying for or renewing their driver's license. Voter registration applications are also available at every state agency, all 87 county offices throughout the state, and online in English, Spanish, Hmong, Somali, Vietnamese, Karen, Russian, Chinese, Lao, Oromo, Khmer, and Amharic.

This afternoon, Secretary Simon will speak at Voterpalooza 2017 at the University of Minnesota in Northrop Plaza. On November 7, 145 local jurisdictions will have an election, including 30 municipalities and 115 school districts.
